The East Sohelwa and West Sohelwa are part of the Sohelwa wildlife sanctuary. It is governed by the Divisional Forest Officer, Sohelwa Wildlife Division, District - Balrampur (U.P.). PERCENTAGE:
The area bears mainly Dry Sal forests. One of the
main species of the area is Sal(Shorea Robusta). The other species found are - Sheesham,
Jamun (Sizizium Cuminii), Rohini , Asana, Gutel, Haldu, Semal (Bombex Ceiba), Mahua
(Mahuca Indica), Khair (Acacia Catechu), Bel (Agel Marmelos) etc. Teak plantations in
large areas have been taken up during recent past.Apart from the above mentioned species,
many shrubs, creepers and grasses are also found in this area. Some of the medicinal

(a) Conservation : The area being natural Sal area, the thrust is to maintain the area as good Sal forest. For the purpose of protection, is being done by the staff and assisted natural regeneration is being taken up . Apart from this, plantations in blank and degraded areas are also being taken up under different Schemes. (b) Plantations Activities Taken Up Under Different Schemes : About 640 hectare blank and degraded forest area is being taken up for plantations during current year 2003 - 2004. (c) National Afforestation Scheme : The Scheme is Founded by Central Government NAEB, Government of India. under this programme an area of 500 hectare is taken up for plantations in plane areas, 400 hectares for artificial natural regeneration of Sal and 60 hectares for Pausture development is being carried out. (d) Massive Tree Plantation / Operation Green : Under this scheme 10 lakhs seedlings will be planted outside the forest area. The main thrust is on the Agro - Forestry and plantations on vacant waste lands (Govt land and private lands both). In Shravasti district, the choice of farmers are- Teak and Poplar species.
